*SCAPE, Saturday, June 13, 2009 — Whoever thought netball is only for girls, think again. At the inaugural Get Energised! Street Netball Challenge in Orchard, men got the opportunity in the Mixed Open category to play what is a sport dominated by females. The event also saw participation in two other categories — the Girls’ Under-17 and the Women’s Open.
In the Mixed Open, Teh Peng, who had won in the same category at the Contiki Beach Netball Festival in March, beat Aciers 12-6 in the final to add a street netball crown to their earlier win. The team consist of Tan Khiok Sing, Nigel Lim, Jean Chia, Hong Wei Zhen and Tay Jia Zhi.
In the Women’s Open, Murderers, who had won in the same category at the Contiki Beach Netball Festival, beat Just Say No 11-6 to also notch up another championship win, on different terrain. The team consist of Netball Super League players Pamela Liew, Grala Teo, Ng Yi Yong and Sharon Wong,
In the girls’ under-17 category, Lightning Bolt, consisting of players from Hwa Chong Institution, beat Thunderbirds 8-6 in the final to emerge champions. Thunderbirds consist of Neo Hoon Suan, Wong Pei Shan, Chin Yu Xuan, Cheryl Lee, Seah Yun Zhen and Ang Qing Ying.
