South Africa, Saturday, July 2, 2010 — Germany destroyed Argentina 4-0 to book their place in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
An early 3rd-minute goal by Thomas Muller was the only goal of the first half and although Argentina threatened briefly, three second half goals sank Argentina.
The victory is all the more impressive with Germany fielding four players aged 23 or under.
Miroslav Klose, playing in his 100th game for Germany, scored the second goal in the 68th minute to take the sting out of the Argentinian attacks.
Needing to chase the game, Argentina threw men forward but that left them even more exposed in the back. In the 74th minute, Bastian Schweinsteiger cut open the Argentinian defence with a direct run into the penalty box. His cut back found teammate Arne Friedrich who toe poked it into the net for Germany’s third.
Klose then got his second in the 89th minute after Mesut Ozil found him with an accurate cross from the left on another counter-attack. Klose now has 14 World Cup goals, two more than Pele, and one short of Ronaldo’s record of 15.
With this victory, Germany have now scored 13 goals, the most goals by any team so far. Apart from Argentina, Germany also scored four in two other games — 4-0 against Australia, and 4-1 against England.
