Singapore Schools beat T-Net@Bukit Merah to advance to semi-finals of girls’ U17 Youth Cup

Singapore Basketball Centre, Sunday, 4 July, 2010 — It was their toughest test yet as both teams had remained unbeaten throughout the tournament so far.

Yet Singapore Schools rose to the challenge to beat an impressive T-Net@Bukit Merah under-17 girls team 66-50 to qualify unbeaten for the semi-finals. They will next face Jurong West Secondary team on Wednesday, 7 July at 7.00pm.

The first quarter was a cagey affair as both teams matched each other point for point. Singapore Schools held a slight advantage of 19-13 after the first quarter on the back of two 3-pointers from Singapore Schools forward Ng Su Rui (#8), also from Jurong West Secondary.

But the game broke open in the second quarter when an aggressive man-to-man defense by Singapore Schools yielded numerous fast break opportunities. Singapore Schools shooting guard Janice Ong (#9) chipped in with five points to extend her team’s lead to 34-20.

T-Net@Bukit Merah were by no means done, however. Led by their impressive point guard Violet (#7), currently studying in Manjusri Secondary, they prevented Singapore Schools from running away in the third quarter. This was despite a good performance from Deanna Ng (#7) from Singapore Schools, who drove to the basket for 7 points.

Violet continued her rich scoring form into the fourth quarter, eventually emerging top-scorer with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, although her team still lost against the stronger Singapore Schools team.

However, T-Net@Bukit Merah can take heart from the fact that they managed to qualify for the semi-finals as well, facing an unbeaten Qun Yan in the other game on Wednesday.
