Kuala Lumpur, Friday, July 16, 2010 — Alan Teh defended his ASEAN School Games Discus title when he claimed gold once again on Day Two of the Track and Field Competiton.

The 18-year-old Hwa Chong Institution student, who has won the Discus gold at the National Schools meet for five straight years since 2006, won in dominant fashion.

Alan’s furthest throw of 49.29 metres was more than two metres further than that of silver medallist Santi Kongtung. In fact, four of his five legal marks would have won him the gold. However, he failed to break his own Games record of 49.96 set last year.

The ASEAN Schools track and field competition was an event by itself until 2009, when 12 sports in the ASEAN Schools Sports Council were merged and organised as the ASEAN School Games.

The pre-2009 Discus record stands at 53.88 metres, set by Alan’s Hwa Chong Institution senior, Scott Wong, in 2008.

Youth Olympic Games-bound Sean Toh won a bronze in the boys’ 110 metres hurdles final with a time of 14.97 seconds.

Fellow YOG teammate Ranjitha d/o Raja clocked an encouraging time in the girls’ 1500 metres final. She finished in a personal best of four minutes 57.62 seconds which was quicker than the year-old games record. With that, Ranjitha is now part of only a handful of national junior runners who have beaten the five-minute barrier in this event.
