Kuala Lumpur, Saturday, July 17, 2010 — Team Singapore picked up two medals on the third day of the ASEAN Schoos Games track and field competition.
Ranjitha d/o Raja followed up her excellent sub-five minute showing in the girls’ 1500 metres yesterday with a silver in the 800 metres. She clocked a quick 2 minutes 23.74 seconds and although she finished third, a disqualification on Vietnam’s Do Thi Thao bumped her up to second.
Hannah Lee clinched a bronze in the girls’ shot put final. The second year Victoria Junior College student, who has been peerless in this event at her local age group level for the past three years, was in second place after the first three throws with her second round hurl of 11.73 metres.
She was overtaken by Indonesia’s eventual silver medallist Eki Febri Ekawati, who threw a 12.10 in the fourth round, but made a good fight of it. Hannah’s last attempt of 12.04 was not quite enough for second place, but still sufficient for the bronze.
Chan Zhi Xuan, who had earlier won a silver in the Discus, finished eighth.
Zachary Devaraj finished without a medal but put up a superb run in the boys’ 1500 metres final. He clocked a time of four minutes 6.11 seconds, less than a second behind third-placed Vuttichai Khunklaeo of Thailand.
The Secondary Four Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student bettered his personal best of 4:11 set in February this year, and also went under the National Schools B Division record of 4:07.3 which he failed to break during the Schools meet in April.
