Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 20, 2010 — Despite facing an early first quarter deficit, Dunman Secondary turned up the style in the remaining three quarters to sweep Jurong Secondary 50-30 to secure their second win of Group X in the National Boys’ C Division Basketball Championship second round.
Both sides had a very slow start with only one point on the scoreboard after five minutes of play. Jurong were the better side in the early goings, however, and towards the end of the first quarter, they managed to edge ahead for a 6-3 lead. Dunman’s #11 scored his side’s only points of the first quarter with a three-pointer.
It was a different Dunman side in the second quarter, as they came out firing on all cylinders. They went on an 8-0 run, hitting Jurong on the break to claim the lead. Jurong, in contrast, seemed to lose focus and they found no reply to their superior opponents.
As a result, they found themselves trailing 11-17 at the end of the half.
In the third quarter, Dunman continued their domination of the match with Dunman #7 leading the charge. He scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the third period as Dunman extended their lead to double digits. Dunman were able to limit Jurong to just four points in the third and even had a 20-point cushion towards the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter was much closer as Jurong attempted to keep pace with Dunman. Although they were able to score 15 points to Dunman’s 16, they were still unable to overcome the massive deficit and they eventually succumbed 30-50.
Despite the defeat to Dunman, Jurong were still able to qualify for the semi-finals as runners-up of the group as they overcame Raffles Institution in the last group game. They will be up against North Vista Secondary while Dunman try to overcome East Zone rivals Anglican High School for a spot in the final.
Both semi-finals will be played at Clementi Sports Hall on Friday, 23rd July.
