Delta Sports Hall, Wednesday, July 28, 2010 — In a hard-fought match, Dunman Secondary girls defeated Anglican High School 55-46 win to emerge as C Division basketball champions. It was Dunman’s second championship title.

Dunman player Sharon Lee also won the Most Valued Player (MVP) award. The petite forward said: ” (I am) very happy. I think we did our best. Our whole team also did our best.”

The game opened with the both teams going for the jugular with game play aggressive and unrelenting.

The faster and more agile Anglican team managed to gain a slight edge over Dunman to lead 12-8 at the end of the first period that was highlighted by a Chin Wan Qing three-pointer.

The second period started off with a penalty awarded to Anglican which saw Chin Wan Qing scoring twice. Then, Dunman’s MVP Sharon Less scored two field goals, with one of them being a three-pointer, bringing the score to 14-13.

Despite game play being intense, no one team was able to gain any significant advantage over the other and the second period ended evenly with both teams scoring 13 points each, putting Anglican ahead 25-21 by half-time.

Dunman saw their fortunes change in the third quarter as Tan Yue Ting led a rejuvenated team some quick baskets. By the end of the third, Dunman were leading 39-34.

The start of the fourth period saw Freda Chua suffer a violent foul that left her lying on the floor and withering in pain. While play continued, sge was attended to by students from Jurong Secondary before the officials paused the game almost 30 seconds later. Although offered help, Freda garnered much cheers and applause from the crowd by walking off the court unassisted.

Spurred on by Freda’s display of fortitude, Anglican’s Foo Yuan Roo scored one minute later with an assist from Pan Xin Lei for Anglican to lead by one point at 41-40.

In the 5th minute, Freda Chua was back in the game. But her arrival did little to help as Dunman scored again and again. Despite Anglican scoring one more field goal and a three-pointer, Dunman stretched their lead to almost 10 points. There was little Anglican could do to stop Dunman from wrapping the game up 55-46.

Dunman coach Mr Koh Ree Wen said: “I feel very very happy. (We did) better than last year.”

Referring to Anglican’s performance, Mr. Koh said: “(Anglican’s performance was) very good. I think they never gave up, even towards the end. A bit careless, but both teams were fighting toe to toe. I think probably (Anglican) #9 (Amanda Lim) was a big influence. And #11 (Foo Yuan Ru), and #10 (Heng Zuo En), they helped quite a bit.”
