Singapore Institute of Management, September 24, 2010 — The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) men’s floorball team beat the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) 4-1 to finish first in the first ever SIM Inter-University Floorball Championship.
The game started off well for SIM, with Tan Kwee Ann (SIM #10) scoring the first goal in the third minute. NTU looked for the equaliser but SIM stayed firm and led 1-0 at the end of the first period.
In the second period, NTU took SIM by surprise in the 25th minute when Brandon Chong (NTU #15) scored through a drag shot, with assistance from Shahrani Rahman (NTU#18).
“Initially, it was a slow start for me but once the engine got started, I went all the way. I am quite pleased with my performance today. I think I played better than Wednesday and would rate myself 4.5 out of 5,” Said the 23-year-old Brandon who also assisted his teammate Low Chong Guan (NTU#14) for the second goal.
When asked about the switch in tactics in the second period, Brandon, who plays for Skools Innebandy, commented: “Well, we kind of changed our style (in the second period). I started to run and pass around more. My teammates also assisted and gave me more space allowing me to shoot.”
In the third period, NTU scored again in the 33rd minute. Kenneth Leong (NTU #29) seized the opportunity to score a third for NTU when SIM’s goalie failed to hold on to the ball.
NTU then scored their final goal in the 44th minute, this time though their captain and match MVP Nick Ow (NTU #7).
When quizzed about his MVP award, Nick applauded his teammates for their great team effort and added: “Well, this is really surprising. I didn’t think I played that well to win this award. I guess perhaps I fought hard till the end and took my chances.”
“I’m feeling really really happy now. Our hard work paid off and we will continue to train harder for the upcoming IVP. SIM team played very well too and it was a good fight,” he added.
SIM coach Najip commented on the loss: “I would say the lack of discipline was one of the reasons for the team’s failure to hold onto the initial lead. The boys did play better than yesterday though, so I’m proud of them.”
