Singapore Institute of Management Grand Hall, Friday, September 24, 2010 — The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) women’s floorball team beat the National University of Singapore (NUS) 4-2 to come in first at the SIM Inter-University Floorball Championship.
A cautious first period saw the game played at a relatively slow pace and the score was deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the first.
The SIM girls managed to get the ball rolling at the restart by scoring the first goal 1:16 into the second period.
Ong Hui Hui (SIM #51) scored the first goal and also added a third for the team by the end of the second period.
“We were leading by 3-0 at the end of the second period but things were still pretty shaky. We couldn’t afford to get complacent. NUS team is known to be quite strong as well,“ said Hui Hui.
In the final period, SIM sustained their momentum and scored another goal 38 minutes into the game to make it 4-0.
Wynne Tang (NUS #42) managed to finally score the first goal for NUS in the final period.
“By the final period, I knew the team was feeling kind of discouraged. However, we managed to pick ourselves up towards the end. At least, we lost with pride. We are definitely looking forward to improving ourselves,” quipped the 20-year-old Wynne.
NUS managed their second goal with just nine seconds left but the final whistle soon after left SIM victorious.
Rury Narita, captain of the SIM floorball team, chirped after the game: “I am really overwhelmed and proud of my team’s performance today. Everyone put up a tough fight. We had nothing to lose and went all out.”
When asked to evaluate the NUS team’s performance tonight, their coach Jill Quek pointed out: “Well, the score says it all. We lost 4-2. However, this is a good experience for the team nonetheless. The SIM team was pretty good too.
“There was an obvious lack of communication for the team and too much exposure of our weaknesses. There was a slow pickup from the start of the game. We have much to work on and prepare ourselves for the upcoming IVP.”
NUS captain Guan JingWen, also added that this was a good learning lesson.
”I would like to say that although we lost the battle, we have won the war. We would like to play more friendlies from now on with various teams (to further improve),” she said.
