India, Friday, October 8, 2010 — Defending champions Singapore beat India 3-0 to win the gold in the women’s team event at the Commonwealth Games.
India made a fight of it as their players took a set each off Feng Tianwei and Li Jiawei. Tianwei eventually beat Mourna Das 3-1 (11-5, 11-3, 9-11, 11-7) in 21 minutes to wrap up the first point.
“India put up a good fight for us and credit to them for making us do nothing but our best. There are no easy games at this level and we take every game seriously,” said Tianwei.
Wang Yuegu took 14 minutes to see off Shamini Kumaresan 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-5) to give Singapore a 2-0 lead.
Poulomi Ghatak took the first set but Jiawei came back to eventually win 3-1 (10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5).
“I am proud that I have been able to defend our Commonwealth Games women’s team title for the third consecutive time. I hope that this is the first of a few more medals here at the Commonwealth Games for us,” said Jiawei.
Their coach Zhou Shusen thought his team did well despite the partisan crowd.
“It is natural that players get distracted once in a while by noise, especially from a full stadium which is rooting for the home team. I think they did very well to maintain their calm and keep going. Our girls are experienced. The victory was comprehensive in the end, and I know they will only get better as the competition continues,” said Shusen.
