Marina Bay, Sunday, October 31, 2010 — Singapore’s Vivian Tang, 40, won the GE Women 10K in a time of 38 minutes 32 seconds to earn herself SGD5,000 in prize money. Vivian is the first local winner of the Women 10K.
Trudy Fawcett of the United Kingdom was second in 40:55 while Siobhan Mchugh of Ireland was third in 42:38.
About 4,200 runners completed the 10km race. The event also had a 5km category.
“I think that it is a very good decision from the organisers of the event to use the appearance fees, normally given to foreign elite runners, to support our local runners. It really encouraged most of us to run faster and do even better. Finishing first this year made it extra special for me,” exclaimed Vivian who bettered her previous year’s time of 38:47.
Money previously set aside to invite foreign runners was used to reward the top 50 runners at the event. The SGD5,000 on offer to the winner is the biggest prize money for a 10km race in Singapore. Vivian also received SGD300 worth of vouchers for her win. For the first time since the race’s inception in 2006, runners in the fourth to 50th position were rewarded with shopping vouchers worth more than SGD2,000.
“We want more runners to be recognised for their efforts this year as we hope to encourage them to perform even better. The Great Eastern Women 10K has distinguished itself as the biggest women’s sporting event in Asia, and by increasing the rewards for participants, we aim to cement our status as the most anticipated running event for women in Singapore,” said Ms Michelle Wong, Country Manager of ESG Sports Singapore, organiser of the event.
The run also raised SGD30,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Runners had the option to pledge part of their registration fees arising from discounts from the early bird savings to the foundation.
“We want to show how we can turn crisis into strength,” said Irene Chui, 45, a breast cancer survivor. “We at the Breast Cancer Foundation are very thankful for the donations and we hope to continue to raise awareness about breast cancer in Singapore. Having survived cancer, I’ve learnt how to embrace life, and that women who are suffering from breast cancer must be brave and do not be dismayed.”
A new Mother-and-Daughter category was also introduced at the event. 280 mother-and-daughter pairs signed up. Karen Lin, 49, and her daughter Lin Wan Ting, 19, ran a 5km race together for the first time at Marina Bay.
“My mother asked me to join the run with her,” said daughter Wan Ting. “We didn’t train for this race but we managed to run the whole distance together without stopping. My mother was a silent motivator and we both had fun. This was indeed a good bonding time with her.”
Explaining this new addition, ESG’s Ms Wong said: “Over the years, we have seen a growing trend of mothers and daughters taking part in the event, and we thought it is timely to introduce this category to provide mothers and daughters the opportunity to race as a team and win attractive prizes.”
