Jakarta, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 — Indonesia got their ASEAN Football Championship (AFF Suzuki Cup) campaign off to a happy start with a 5-1 thrashing of Malaysia in Group A.

Malaysia took the lead in the 18th minute through Norshahrul Idlan but Indonesia came back with two goals before half time. An own goal by Malaysian defender Asraruddin Putra and an excellent Christian Gonzales goal gave the home team a 2-1 half-time lead.

Muhammad Ridwan, substitute Arif Suyono and Irfan Bachdim then scored three more times in the second half to inflict the heaviest defeat Malaysia have ever suffered in the competition.

“I’m disappointed with the result because I do not think that it was a true reflection of the game,” said the Malaysia coach K.Rajagobal, according to the affsuzukicup.com website. “I feel a bit bad for the players because I thought that we played well in packets but we made bad mistakes at crucial times.

“Our players still tried to give it a go but they were tired at the end. And as the goals started to go in for Indonesia, they just grew in confidence while our players felt frustrated.”
