Hanoi, Thursday, December 2, 2010 — Defending champions Vietnam got their ASEAN Football Championship (AFF Suzuki Cup) off to a rousing start with a 7-1 thrashing of Myanmar in their Group B game.
Vietnam got their first goal in the 13th minute through Anh Duc who reacted fastest to a loose ball that the Myanmar keeper could not hold on to. However, Myanmar equalised quickly through Aung Kyaw Moe three minutes later.
Vietnamese captain Minh Phuong then restored his team’s lead in the 30th minute for the home team to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.
In the second half, Vietnam exploded for five more goals to put all three points beyond doubt while improving their goal difference advantage.
“I spoke to the players about this and after we went 4-1 up, some teams would think this is enough,” said Vietnam head coach Enrique Calisto on affsuzukicup.com. “But we had to keep going, to score one more and one more because the goal difference is important.”
Vietnam will next play the Philippines and coach Calisto is not taking them lightly.
“The Philippines are a strong team with a strong defence and we must be careful. I hope I can transmit this to my players because one game is not enough. It’s been a difficult time for former champions. Thailand drew 2-2 with Laos and Singapore drew with the Philippines and that shows there are no easy games, these are finished,” added Calisto.
