The Padang, Sunday, November 5, 2010 — Mok Ying Ren, 22, was crowned Singapore’s fastest marathoner at the 2010 Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore when he ran a personal best of 2 hours 38 minutes and 28 seconds. Ying Ren made his marathon debut last year in 2009 in 2:43:42 to also finish as the fastest Singaporean.
Ashley Liew was the second fastest Singaporean in 2:52:29 while Ramesh s/o Palaniandy was third in 2:52:55.
In the local women’s category, Anne Date was the fastest Singaporean when she clocked 3:12:24. Elaine Lim was the second fastest in 3:23:21 while Jeradine Collett was third in 3:24:19.
“I was expecting a PB definitely based on my training,” said Mok, who was targetting a 2:35. “2:35 requires a per km split of 3:40. We were on target for most of it but we got kinda carried away chasing the women’s lead pack camera that we spent 10km running at 3:33/km. Thus that kinda burned things up a little bit and had to pay for it at [Benjamin] Sheares Bridge.”
Mok, a medical student at the National University of Singapore, was also pushed along by a pace runner as he set his PB.
“I was running with Jason Lawrence, my training partner. He was absent from the Singapore running scene this whole year as he was back in NZ for a teaching degree. Now he is back in Singapore to be a teacher at an international school and we will be rocking the running scene these few years together! He has a marathon PB of 2:28 and it was a nice easy long run for him, in his words.”
Singapore Management University student Ashley Liew came the closest to challenging Mok for the title of “Singapore’s fastest marathoner”.
“Ashley Liew was my closest challenger. He was ahead for 10 kilometers before Jason and I closed up on him at 10km,” said Mok, whose achievement netted him $10,000.
