Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Monday, January 17, 2011 — Singapore Management University (SMU) narrowly beat Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) by 2-1 in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic IVP Women’s Floorball CHampionship. This gave SMU their first win of the competition while NP succumbed to their third loss.
The match opened with aggressive play from both teams. Within five minutes of the start, Adhe Sarariany Andi Djohar (NP #16) scored the first goal, with assistance from Phoebe Khoo (NP#17) via a corner pass. With just a few seconds left in the first period, the SMU #26 equalised, assisted by #14, and the first period ended 1-1.
The second period saw both sides struggle to take possession of the ball and control play. Many attempted shots were made by both teams but none went through and it was still 1-1 at the end of the second period.
Seven minutes into the third period, SMU player Li Mei Xian #17 scored from a considerable distance into the left corner of the goal, giving SMU the lead for the first time. Good defensive play by SMU prevented NP from equalising and SMU wrapped up their first victory of the competition 2-1.
“Our team definitely had the fighting spirit and the drive was there. I guess they need to learn to play with a sense of urgency. This team needs more experience and increased trainings are needed. The POL-ITE games are coming up and I think they will do much better,” said coach Jaime of Ngee Ann Polytechnic as she summed up her team’s performance.
SMU coach Dennis Ng commented on his team’s performance: “We had our limitations from the start but at least we tried to match up in various ways and strike a balance during the game.”
Throughout the match, coach Dennis huddled close to the sidelines, constantly shouting reminders to his players on court. When asked if his booming enthusiastic on-court coaching proved vital to the team’s win that night, the man chuckled and replied with a smile: “Well, firstly they must have it in them (hunger to win). I did my fair bit but ultimately they did the rest. They played hard.”

Ed’s note: If you know the names of the players mentioned, please let us know and we’ll update the story. Thanks.
hi I’m 17 and I wasn’t in the line that scored the goal hahahaha, just saying.
Hello there,
I think that this article could have been better written. Since the reporter was on site, it would be better to have the players’ name included. The information could easily be obtained from the match sect. table at the venue.
Also, I find it perculiar for the reporter not to have included SMU’s first goal which was rather dramatic. They beat the first half buzzer to equalise with NP. Shouldn’t this be the focus of the article since it is the deciding factor of the game?
There are also inaccurate facts. The ball was not passed from #17 that resulted in #16’s goal. Instead, NP’s first goal was assisted by #25.
The last thing I would like to point out is the term ‘considerable distance’ used in the article. In sports journalism, (eg. football), something like “the goal was scored from 5 metres out” is usually used. Considerable is subjective.
That is all.
Thank you.
Hi Sara
i agree it would be better to acknowledge and list all the players’ names down if a copy could be given to us.Additionally,if you could provide the players’ names,we will be glad to add it in.
The scores which i hand copied reflected that the first goal scored by NP was shot in by player 17 and assisted by player 16.If you happen to know any official score takers that could verify this,i will change accordingly.
The highlight of SMU’s first goal to equalize with NP lies in the fact that it was scored at the fifteen minute and was eventually considered. However, deciding factor or not,i stick to the point that it is subjective.Hence,i did not put this as the main focus.
Thank you for your specific comments regarding floorball coverage.Noted.
Thanks for reading my article.
Thanks Sherry for replying promptly and making the necessary changes. Appreciate it.
However, I would like to point out that the goal was scored by #16, not #17, as stated in your reply. Since you got the official copy from the match sect. I’m sure the names are reflected there as well, which you may use in your article.
This is my personal take on sports reporting or any others for the matter, we usually find the most exciting angle and take it from there. If not, the story comes across as a blow-by-blow account.
(This is based on experience)
That is all.
Thank you & best regards.
sorry about the mix up in the reply.yes,as written in my article,it was # 16 that scored the goal, assisted by #17.You wrote that it was #25 that assisted instead, right? If so,i think the official score takers can also be informed about it.I will see if i can get the official copy because i hand copied the scores.
NP #16 would be Adhe Sarariany Andi Djohar while NP #17 would be Phoebe Khoo.
Also, the NP’s coach name should be Jaime.
Do make the necessary changes. Thank you (:
