YOG triathlete and Victoria Junior College student Clara Wong, 18, cites her parents as her biggest fans.

“My dad keeps all my timings in the races I’ve been in. He’s like my personal manager!” said the former Methodist Girls’ School student. The inspiring story of Clara Wong’s participation in the YOG triathlon was chosen as the Red Sports 2010 Story of the Year.

National softballer Gerann Ngiam, 19, who finished second in the 2009 Athlete of the Year poll behind the Institute of Technical Education rugby player Low Feng Hua, also cites the influence of his father.

“I quit water polo (in Sec 2) because it was tiring since I had to wake up early at six in the morning. So my dad, who played softball for the national team said, ‘Hey, if you don’t like water polo I can help you in softball.’”

“And so, I quit water polo that year to join softball. Indirectly, my Dad helped me make my decision. I think I am where I am now because of him because he helped me a lot back then,” said Gerann who is studying at Singapore Polytechnic and is now on the national softball team. His aim is to play for his country at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.
