Bedok Reservoir Park, Saturday, February 19, 2011 — Catholic High’s Heng Yu Jie posted a time of 14 minutes 14.22 seconds on the 4.2 kilometres Bedok Reservoir course to win the Boys’ Under-17 category at the Wings Cross Country Championships.
In winning, Yu Jie turned the tables on Victoria School’s Marcus Ng whom he had finished runner-up to in the C Division (Under-14 equivalent) of last year’s National Inter-School Cross Country Championships.
At the 2010 National Schools race, Yu Jie had lost out to Marcus by a whopping 44 seconds. But this time at the Wings Cross Country Championships, Yu Jie finished ahead of Marcus by 10 seconds.
Yu Jie’s individual achievement was not sufficient to help his team beat Marcus’ team however as Victoria School claimed the Under-17 team title with 25 points. Yu Jie’s Catholic High team took silver with 51 points.
While Yu Jie and Marcus made the climb up in age-groups with little effect to their positions, Zachary Devaraj (2010 National Inter-School B Division cross country champion) and Aldrich Lim (2010 National Inter-School B Division cross country runner-up) could not say the same of themselves.
Competing in the Men’s Open category where most of their competitors are their rivals in the A Division (Under-20 equivalent), Zachary and Aldrich finished in 28th and 13th positions respectively.
Zachary, running for Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), clocked 14:47.81. Aldrich, a freshman at Catholic Junior College, clocked 14:20.00.
The winner of the Men’s Open was Wings Athletic Club’s own Soh Rui Yong. The full-time national serviceman clocked 13:32.60 to beat Hwa Chong Institution’s Jeevaneesh Soundararajah by four seconds for the victory.
It was Rui Yong’s first victory at the Championships after finishing second in 2009 and 2010 to Mok Ying Ren and Lim Kien Mau respectively.
