Outram Secondary School gave the water polo powerhouses a surprise when their C Division boys clinched a spot in the final against defending champions Anglo-Chinese School (Independent).

Outram have never come close to the Big Four — ACS(I), ACS (Barker Road), Hwa Chong Institution and Raffles Institution — for the past 18 years.

Wynne Chan of Outram said: “When I first join the Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), I was learning how to swim properly and two minutes of treading water already tired us out. But my teachers and coaches told us in order to catch up with the better players, we had to work doubly hard.”

Outram is the only co-ed school with water polo as a CCA and the players did not have a proper swimming background. Many had to learn how to swim properly before they even learnt how to play the game. Some parents commented that the boys were willing to train hard everyday and decided to give their full support after seeing their children have such passion for the sport.

Teachers in charge Mr Francis Tang and Mr Damien Ho said: “We told the boys that winning is not important. What is more important is that they are willing to work hard for it. Their consistency and discipline in their trainings and routines will determine the outcome of their years of handwork. They are all already a winner in their own ways.”

Outram will play ACS(I) in the C Division final at the Co-Curricular Activities Branch (CCAB) on March 23rd, 11am.

In the meantime, the B Division Water Polo Championship is on going. The Outram B Division team is looking good to challenge the Big Four as well this season.
