Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 28, 2011 — Christ Church Secondary, Unity Secondary, Anglican High and St Margaret’s Secondary tipped off their season with victories in round one of the girls’ National B Division Basketball Championship.
The pick of the ties was Christ Church’s one-point, 40-39 victory over Raffles Girls’ School in Group C. RGS tied it up 39-39 with a few seconds left on the clock. However, with 0.2 seconds left, an RGS player committed a foul, awarding Christ Church with two free-throws. Christ Church took hold of the chance and won the game by sinking one of the two shots given.
In another Group C game, a few three-pointers by Violet Chua (Manjusri #11) and a tight Manjsuri defense forced Unity into a hard fight. The West Zone champions eventually won beat Manjusri 63-45. Unity led 28-22 at half-time.
In a Group A game, St Margaret’s beat Woodgrove 35-15. St Margaret’s managed to convert a number of interceptions into points throughout the game. This forced Woodgrove into changing their tactics in order to keep their turnovers minimal. Trailing 10-21 at half-time, it was hard for Woodgrove to come back and they faced an average deficit of 10 points in the second half.
In another Group A game, East Zone runners-up Anglican High beat Nanyang Girls’ High 43-29.
