Seng Kang Stadium, Friday, April 1, 2011 — Teck Whye Secondary stunned hot favorites Seng Kang Secondary after outgunning them 3-1 in the penalty shootout. The match was deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time and extra time failed to yield a decisive result.
Teck Whye now have a chance to achieve a unique double with their girls’ team also in the final.
Seng Kang came into this semi-final match as hot favorites after having previously beaten Teck Whye 5-2 in a group match encounter.
Teck Whye started the game on a strong note, pegging Seng Kang back in defense. It wasn’t long before they scored first. A mazy dribble allowed the Teck Whye attacker to avoid his defender before slotting the ball into the corner.
The shock of conceding the first goal jolted Seng Kang into action and it didn’t take long before Seng Kang equalized. Slick passing movement saw them entrench themselves around the Teck Whye penalty area and a long shot from the edge of the “D” broke the deadlock.
Sensing a change in the tide, Seng Kang pressed on their attack. They were duly rewarded with a short corner which they converted to take a 2-1 lead which they held at the break.
Midway through the second half, Teck Whye earned a short corner and their well-worked set piece saw them score the equaliser.
With less then 10 minutes left in the second half, Teck Whye were dealt a cruel blow when two of their players were shown the yellow card in quick succession. Both players were sent to the sin bin to sit out the game for at five minutes. Despite the numerical advantage, Seng Kang failed to capitalized and the game went into extra time.
Both teams failed to score in extra time and it was down to penalties again to decide the outcome.
Teck Whye gained the decisive advantage in the shootout after they managed to score on their first two attempts while Seng Kang missed both of their first two flicks. The Teck Whye goalkeeper was in fine form, making one save at full stretch with the tip of his toes.
Despite missing their third penalty flick, Teck Whye sealed the match after scoring their fourth penalty flick, giving them an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Teck Whye will now face Victoria School in the B Division Boys final on April 7th, at Sengkang Stadium.
