CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), Friday, April 15, 2011 — Netball powerhouse CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) missed out on the final for the first time in four years after losing 49-50 to Greenview Secondary in extra time. Greenview sank a the penalty shot in the final second to win their National B Division Netball Championship semi-final.
The last time CHIJ did not make the National B Division final was 2007 when they were knocked out in the second round.
The first quarter saw both teams settling down quickly and making little errors with CHIJ leading 11-10 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The game was still a tight affair in the second quarter. However, Greenview managed to create a precious turnover with a few minutes left on the clock to steal the lead 21-20 at half time.
In the third quarter, Greenview Goal Keeper, Grace Ang, went on a hunting spree, intercepting several balls which were converted. CHIJ were also not making wise passes which further exacerbated the situation for them and Greenview led 31-25 at the third quarter break.
Just as the game seemed to be over, CHIJ fired themselves up in the final quarter. The CHIJ Goal Shooter (GS) became more mobile to keep Grace Ang (Greenview GK) busy and the CHIJ defenders also tightened their defence to forced a couple of held balls.
CHIJ had more patience and better vision to narrow the deficit slowly to finally draw level at 39-39 at full time to force the game into extra time.
In the first minute of the extra time period, the CHIJ GS missed her shot and her opponent won the rebound. Greenview converted this to take the lead 40-39. From then on, CHIJ had to play a chasing game. Both teams were 44-apiece at half time of the extra time period.
Both teams continue to score from their own centre passes. With little time left on the clock, CHIJ defenders created a turnover. However, the CHIJ Goal Attack could not put in the shot to take the lead.
In the final second with both teams at 49-apiece, a contact call against the CHIJ Goal Defence gave Greenview the most important penalty shot of the match. When the Greenview GS, Chow Xing Hui put in the shot, her teammates went crazy as the buzzer went to signal a 50-49 win.
“We were the underdogs. We did not have as much pressure as CHIJ probably would have since CHIJ came in second last year. When we went into extra time, I told the girls that they threw away the game in the fourth quarter. We were up by 7 points yet we allowed CHIJ to draw level in the game,” said Greenview coach Bok.
“I told the team that we will win as we went into the extra time. I knew if we played to our best, we should be able to win. The feeling was indescribable when we won the game,” shared Greenview’s captain, Vivian Koe.
“My girls have given their best efforts and my shooters shot well. In this kind of close game, luck probably played some parts as well,” said CHIJ coach Kok Mun Wai.
Greenview will play Singapore Sports School in the final. They met earlier in the second round and Sports School beat Greenview 34-27 then.
“The only thing that is stopping us from beating Sports School is the thought in us that they are Sports School. As long as we are able to put aside this thought, we should be able to beat them because we know we are the best,” said Koe.
GREENVIEW ROCKS!! Thier damn awesome:) I’m sure they had a goodnight sleep aft winning and knowing they are able to play in nationals finals! HARD WORK PAYS OFF YOU KNOW.
haha! yeah right~ the gv was the one who started it on twitter please, who r u to comment when u dont even know whats happening -.- omg seriously i feel retarded here.
greenview wouldn’t have called you’ll sore losers if you’ll didn’t do anything right -.- It’s not like you’ll did anything after the match. Obviously you guys started it first.
That girl was holding the GK’s hand back! :O
If you are matured enough then stop al lthis nonesones. What makes you think I’m from greenview?? To everyone they played dirty but to the umpires. They did not play dirty so whos fault is it?? Umpires or us?? Of cause umpires. Plus looking at everything. Greenview didn’t start it. You guys started it by saying they cheat. Get the facts straight. Look down on neighborhood school only.
omg this is funny! we childish? who was the one who created the chijsorelosers tread? its not that we dont wanna let go but yall started it first, so u think we actually bother fighting with yall -.- btw, the coaches from the other schools were there n saw how the match was played! the umpires were freaking unfair, players play dirty! so much about sportsmanship, i think we all know who has better sportsmanship.
Hey come on, Greenview really worked hard for this.. I think they should at least have one chance to win. It’s hardly that east zone netball teams get into the top 4 of nationals. I played against them, and this year, they are good. So please, don’t demoralize them. And, what you define as a contact may not be a contact to the umpires…
But the fact remains that the tiebreaker was 15 seconds longer. which meant if the GV timekeeper told the umpire on time, they would still be tied and IJ can still win.
Exactly! The 15 secs of injust. If the gv timekeeper has intergrity, she would have told the umpire to stop in time.!
Eastzonenetballer, I totally agree with you. And even if what y’all said was true, I’m sure the timekeeper didn’t do that purposely, who doesn’t make mistakes?! Forgive and forget, stop harping on it.
Than where are those sportsmanship in CHIJ?
How you know they cheat?? Because the players said so?? Because you saw?? Did you say that because they were just neighbourhood schools and then you think lowly on them and if you lose is definately they cheat?? Come on people. Just let it go and play your next game. Saying all this can’t change anything. Just focus on your games. Can?
Come on. Dont be so childish people. If lose then just let it go! It’s not like that world is going to end. If the umpire did not catch them then is their fault. Not greenviews. Blame the umpire. Don’t blame them. Stop scolding them.
hey cmon don’t start it here and create a war. don’t let the players get hurt
so what if they won, everyone where knows what happened! they cheated!
there*
but like seriously -.-
Players should focus on what is within their control in the game. Like their own play. Umpiring is out of their control so everyone should stop harping on it. To overcome that teams should just train harder to be better and be prepared for the worst.
and when chij’s time shouted time! guess what the empire did, the empire just let the game continue -.-
GV shouldnt make it seem that they’ve won with pride because they didnt.. no sportsmanship!empires are really bad! only look at the second contact not the first! imagine someone pushes you, obviously you’ll push the person back right?
What happened to sportsmanship? What happened to the good and unbiased umpires? Why didn’t they blow the whistle when they played dirty? Rematch plz.
i guess bad empires / referees are the norm in singapore n around the world nowadays. CHIJ should have their heads held high after that game because they played with sportsmanship and never gave up. good job CHIJ!
It’s always that guy umpire who’s biased against us.
When IJ commited the penalty, was it within the tiebreak time? o.O
Nope, it was after. And therefore turns to a cheat. Which is why everyone is hating on gv now.
The shooter is chow xinghui
The school that played with sportsmanship deserved to win. I hope GV have a good night’s sleep because they know what they’ve done.
I totally agree with this. There were so many contacts and pushing done by greenview. they were so dirty in their play and yet the umpires didn’t call for all those mistakes.
also, in the 2nd tie-breaker, the timekeeper was 15secs late. and that allowed gv to win. and yet the umpires did not call for another tie breaker.
what happened to all the good umpires?
