CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), Friday, April 15, 2011 — Netball powerhouse CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) missed out on the final for the first time in four years after losing 49-50 to Greenview Secondary in extra time. Greenview sank a the penalty shot in the final second to win their National B Division Netball Championship semi-final.
The last time CHIJ did not make the National B Division final was 2007 when they were knocked out in the second round.
The first quarter saw both teams settling down quickly and making little errors with CHIJ leading 11-10 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The game was still a tight affair in the second quarter. However, Greenview managed to create a precious turnover with a few minutes left on the clock to steal the lead 21-20 at half time.
In the third quarter, Greenview Goal Keeper, Grace Ang, went on a hunting spree, intercepting several balls which were converted. CHIJ were also not making wise passes which further exacerbated the situation for them and Greenview led 31-25 at the third quarter break.
Just as the game seemed to be over, CHIJ fired themselves up in the final quarter. The CHIJ Goal Shooter (GS) became more mobile to keep Grace Ang (Greenview GK) busy and the CHIJ defenders also tightened their defence to forced a couple of held balls.
CHIJ had more patience and better vision to narrow the deficit slowly to finally draw level at 39-39 at full time to force the game into extra time.
In the first minute of the extra time period, the CHIJ GS missed her shot and her opponent won the rebound. Greenview converted this to take the lead 40-39. From then on, CHIJ had to play a chasing game. Both teams were 44-apiece at half time of the extra time period.
Both teams continue to score from their own centre passes. With little time left on the clock, CHIJ defenders created a turnover. However, the CHIJ Goal Attack could not put in the shot to take the lead.
In the final second with both teams at 49-apiece, a contact call against the CHIJ Goal Defence gave Greenview the most important penalty shot of the match. When the Greenview GS, Chow Xing Hui put in the shot, her teammates went crazy as the buzzer went to signal a 50-49 win.
“We were the underdogs. We did not have as much pressure as CHIJ probably would have since CHIJ came in second last year. When we went into extra time, I told the girls that they threw away the game in the fourth quarter. We were up by 7 points yet we allowed CHIJ to draw level in the game,” said Greenview coach Bok.
“I told the team that we will win as we went into the extra time. I knew if we played to our best, we should be able to win. The feeling was indescribable when we won the game,” shared Greenview’s captain, Vivian Koe.
“My girls have given their best efforts and my shooters shot well. In this kind of close game, luck probably played some parts as well,” said CHIJ coach Kok Mun Wai.
Greenview will play Singapore Sports School in the final. They met earlier in the second round and Sports School beat Greenview 34-27 then.
“The only thing that is stopping us from beating Sports School is the thought in us that they are Sports School. As long as we are able to put aside this thought, we should be able to beat them because we know we are the best,” said Koe.
Get a life people, what’s done is done. No matter what you say won’t change a thing lovable people :3
And about the time thing, it’s supposed to be time over even before the reaches in the semi circle? But the timekeeper still stroll to the umpire then when ij’s GK contact then she say time over? And stop saying people sorelosers okay? Get your facts right first. Don’t be biased, don’t always look at the tone, oh do y’all even study social studies or history? Okay irrelevant. Sorry. Bye.
Hello I was there and the gv timekeeper didn’t STROLL to the umpire, she was practically chasing after the umpire before she counted down, I witnessed it. And I’m pretty sure she didn’t stall time at all okay. Don’t make up stories just for the sake of proving your stand that they cheated.
hey, im not from greenview, but like they didnt cheat okay!! i was there watching the match. there was a penalty before the whistle was blown when ij’s defender contacted gv’s shooter. so the penalty shot was counted and no cheating was involved. greenview worked their butts off the whole year, and both teams put up a good fight that friday! so stop flaming each other and making fun of each other, cos the results wont change.
I was there and i saw the game. I don’t support any of both schs in particular. But greenview did not cheat during the last “15 seconds”. Before the last whistle was blown, there was a penalty shot. After that the last whistle was blown and thus they could still take the penalty shot, which they did.
if ij could have won gv, there wouldnt be a 6/7 goals lead at the end of third quart. Comeon show some sportsmanship. And if you’re really that unhappy train harder and get your champs back. It really just show that ij has got no sportsmanship.
How you know? You go time ah…
anyways, i see someone who’s losing an argument and has nothing to come back with. so here comes the “oh but we have other people’s support, so whatever!”
hey, who’s here to insult others’ command of English? if netball could be won just by having good English then maybe you could talk about that. just because one’s a neighbourhood school doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to win. so, are you here to make attacks on their command of English or here to complain about their cheating? either way you can’t change the results, they won and that’s it.
Ehhhh CHIJ, you girls lost to us. So stop saying we cheat. Lose means lose. Don’t give excuses that we cheat. just shut up and go play your third and forth match. We GVSS are playing first and second. If still not happy, come down to GVSS ah. We see who got more gangsters. Your school or ours. I swear you will get it from us if you got the guts to come down. CHIJ SORE LOSERS!!
nice one
Yes!! Exactly!! I totally agree with trolldetector. So can you guys just shake hands and call truce?? On tuesday when you meet. Hope no more of this happens.
Ijtp started it on twitter, claiming that they cheated, no sportsmanship, making fun of their school name etc. That’s why they started the trend thing.
Got more coaches with you all means you all will win meh-.-umpire’s decision is final la..not happy go find them
whatever it is the coaches from other schools also agree with us, so whatever! the other schools are with us, and thats good enough!
Hey troll, look, so what if the coaches are on your side? Bootlickers? We don’t know. If you have such “STRONG” belief that you guys “deserve” to win, get the sports association to help you. =)
Acting like a baby doesn’t help. Even IF gvss did cheat, whats with the baby crying and whining? Don’t you have better things to do?
@trolldetector Hahaha, don’t YOU yourself have anything better to do, commenting on people’s comment.
u also bo liao comment on others people coment ‘s comment
Lol time’s up but the defenders contacted in semi circle so there’s a penalty shot-.- and if you all didnt start saying gv cheated, would they say you all were sore losers? Zzzzzzz
time was up before the defender made the contact
fine the ref. is at fault! but gvss started the chijsorelosers tread! we have poor attitude? wow i really dont know what to say! they are nothing better.
Yeah! The tweets that they type is just retarded! Their command of English is atrocious, you can’t blame ij for mocking their tweets! Sighs, they have gv has no sportsmanship.
I man they have no sportsmanship*
Really? Tell me then, for what gvss want to call IJTP soreloser? On what reason? You assume GVSS will accuse IJTP for nothing? Pulling their own reputation down even when they had won? i tell you, u are talking trash.
IJTP players are the one who spark this quarrelling. Get your facts right. Dwag.
The gv netballers might have worked hard but so did the ij netballers. Hmmm, ultimately I think the gv timekeeper is to blame, for not informing the discrepancy in time.
greenview called chij sore losers because you’ll were the ones that started flaming them first. get the facts right.
Hey, if the ref. are biased, what does it got to do with GVSS cheating? Gvss did not pay the ref to be biased. Even if Gvss cheated, it should be up to the ref to judge. Whats the point of saying GVSS cheated? It only make CHIJ’s players look petty, arrogant. Cant accept such setback? From a top girls school? Omg? Good in studies but with poor attitude eh?
ED’S NOTE: COMMENTS EDITED FOR LANGUAGE.
Hey! Don’t say we look down on you guys okay! It’s an actual fact and those who were watching the match would know that gv did play dirty.
Proof please. =)
You said those who are watching, who are they?
IJTP’s players’ parents? IJTP students? IJTP Players? IF you have proof, complain it to the ref. Show it out. If you dont, please be quiet. Admit defeat.
REMATCH!!
