Jia Hui and Jia Le are a pair of identical twins from Fairfield Methodist School. Both of them, who will turn 16 in December, have even been nicknamed the “The Confusing Twins” by one of their juniors. Jia Hui, who is older by six minutes, is the slightly more easy-going among the two while Jia Le is more serious.

“Everything about [Jia Le] is sharp, be it looks or personality,” shared Jia Hui.

Both sisters took up the sport in Primary Four when they decided that they wanted to join a sports CCA. However, their primary school did not have girls’ basketball as a CCA while the intake for badminton was full. Hence, volleyball. Currently, Jia Hui is an outside spiker while Jia Le is a centre spiker.

The captain of Fairfield’s volleyball team, Jermaine Tan, shared about her two teammates.

“The way they do things is really similar, like the things they wear and carry. Both of them are serious when it comes to important things. There was once when we were having an overseas training trip in Malaysia and it happened to fall on their birthdays. During dinner, our coach decided to surprise them with a cake. All of us were singing the birthday song in excitement while both of them just sat still in their seats, almost with no expression.

“But of course they both have a fun side. I like seeing the both of them bicker and play among each other as it is really quite funny to watch! Sometimes, one of them would just ‘attack’ the other one out of the blue and of course the one who got ‘attacked’ would fight back, but in a joking manner of course,” said Jermaine.

Being so similar certainly has it’s ups and downs. Jia Hui shared, “I think Jia Le takes my school socks since I usually can’t find them every time the laundry is done.”

But Jia Hui certainly found it quite cool to be on the same team as her sister.

“There’s always someone to talk to if something goes weird or wrong during training. Jia Le is really good. She’s naturally talented and she has improved a lot since primary school.”

Jermaine also found some advantage to having the pair of sisters on their team.

“They can confuse our opponents! At the start, I had difficulty telling the both of them apart because they really looked the same! But luckily Jia Hui wore spectacles while Jia Le does not. So that really helped a lot, but then Jia Hui started wearing contact lenses. I would still have some occasional mix-ups but because I see them so often, it has already become quite easy to distinguish between the both of them. However, my coach would sometimes still mistake one of them for the other and actually talk to the wrong person without realising it!”
