Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 25, 2011 – East and West Zone powerhouses Dunman Secondary and Unity Secondary booked their places in the National B Division Basketball Championship boys’ and girls’ finals in differing ways at the national semi-final matches.
While both the boys teams beat their opponents convincingly, the Dunman Sec girls had to endure a fierce comeback from Jurong West Sec before emerging with a 50-48 win.
Unity Sec started the ball rolling with a 58-48 win in their game against south zone title holder Singapore Chinese Girls School. The surprise package from south zone did display great resilience by going on a 14-6 run in the third quarter, but still lost out eventually to a superior Unity team.
Jurong Sec, in a reprise of the west zone final, held Unity Sec to a close 4-point game at half time.
Unity’s key centre Delvin Goh (#14) was held to just 3 points in that period but his teammates were able to contribute, with Wong Keng Yong (#8) scoring 11 points.
Jurong Sec’s centre Alvin Chua (#15) put in an energetic display with 11 points of his own in the first half, but his team went cold in the third quarter to trail 41-55 in the third.
Unity Sec eventually cruised to a 71-55 win on the back of an assured team performance.
Anglican High trailed for much of the game against Dunman Sec in a repeat of the east zone final match-up. Yet a flurry of 3-pointers by Sherwin (#5, AHS) late in the fourth quarter made the game interesting.
In the end, it was too much of Thng Jun Rong (#7, Dunman). He emerged top scorer of the game on a variety of lay-ups and jumpshots with 38 points to down Anglican High 81-67.
The final will be played on 30 April (Thu).
