It looks like Victoria Junior College were denied a last-minute equalising goal in their 0-1 loss to Meridian Junior College during the final of the National A Division Football Championship played last Tuesday, May 24th, 2011.
MJC were down to 10 men for the remaining 35 minutes of the second half after their goalkeeper Daniel Lightfoot was sent off for a professional foul on Dilip Thapa of VJC. A first half goal by Hairi had given MJC a slim 1-0 lead.
Try as they might, VJC could not score and when they did put the ball into the net, it was ruled out for offside.
As it turns out now, that decision was incorrect, based on the video below (7:48 mark onwards). Who knows what would have happened if the game had gone into extra time.
If Lightfoot got a red, shouldn’t it be a penalty as well? Why is it a freekick. I don’t understand.
because the foul was outside the box
According to the ‘The Offside Rule and Offside Trap in Football(Soccer) Guide : Common Question
Why are linesmen (assistant referees) always calling offside when it isn’t? Well believe it or not its not really their fault (unless the decision goes against you or your team), it’s all to do with angles and line of sight.
.
I agree wz Sg boy…..the player in the offside position was the one who did the bicycle kick (no.16) and not the scorer (no.11). IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ANGLE!!From where the video was taken, it certainly looked like no. 16 was behind the defender cos we are all looking down at an angle (almost the extreme opposite end of the stadium). However, from where the linesman and referee was, it wud have been clearer and linesman line of sight wud be parallel with the goal line hence the offside call!
Nope, now that you guys can see that #11 wasn’t offside, you guys are trying to save your faces by saying that #16 was offside and saying that the camera couldn’t capture this, angle this, referee not to blame that blah blah blah. Fact is, when I saw it during the game itself, when #11 scored, I straight away looked at the linesman coz I thought #11 was offside. Turns out, when #16 made the connection on the bicycle kick, the ball looped in the air for a period of time and #11 moved quite a bit forward while the MJC defenders didn’t move and when it came off the crossbar, he tapped in the rebound when he looked to be offside when in fact, he was BEHIND the MJC defenders when #16 made the connection with the ball. So it was onside, the referee made a bad mistake, VJC were unlucky. I can accept this. But don’t go around finding invisible faults, it’s just disgraceful, even if the camera showed that #16 was onside, next thing we know, you guys will be saying that #15 was offside. It’s over, you guys won, VJC lost, move on, the trophy isn’t enough for you all is it? Want to salvage your pride by pointing out all these invisible errors when all you do is embarrassing yourselves. Shameless.
Football…..relax ah…..I’m not even frm MJC.
Y u get upset for? I’m just an outsider stating facts…..these r not excuses…..
These r facts relating to offside calls……it’s not even MJC’s fault cos it not their call.
@ football…..Salvage what pride? Btw, who’s embarassed n why so angsty one??? You are the one sounding like a bloody sore loser!!! MJC won fair & square….with 10 men some more and wz a goalie who is not even a goalie…..Who should be ashamed???
Save what face??? Whos’ No. 15? OMG….What r u talking abt???
@Al, you from MJC right? Can you please stop it? People will really think we’re all so stuck up and boorish.
Dear all, not everyone from MJC is arrogant and pig-headed. Most of us don’t really care.
By the way, I must commend both teams for playing their utmost.
lol actually to be honest, football kind of makes sense. Try to understand them, his points are actually valid.. no need argue with each other lah. MJ won,be happy lah. Why argue??
Eh I think the one that is offside is the one that did the overhead kick.
U guys are focusing on the wrg guy
Check again. There’s no cause or reason for you think it’s an offside whoever you’re looking at.
It’s all about the angle lah….If we can all see clearly from wherever we r sitting, then no need for linesman rite????
Like the saying goes…..MAY THE BEST MEN WIN! Well, the best men did win! If VJC were that good, they wudnt need more than half hr just to score in that last goal…..against 10men some more……
Les, i don’t think extra time wud hv made any difference! Prob end wz penalties
Lightfoot shd hve gotten a yellow card not RED!!!!!
Agreed! The tackle was made after Dilip already kicked the ball….and it wasnt going to be a goal anyway….Should have been a yellow card!!!!!!!!! Red card was too harsh! especially on a finals and for school competition some more…..
‘Agreed! The tackle was made after Dilip already kicked the ball’ – Shouldn’t that be an obvious red card since he’s also the last man through on goal?
yeappp, means that Lightfoot totally didn’t touch the ball and that it was a clean straight red
LOL. Keep dreaming, brother.
From a neutral point of view, that goal was clearly onside.it’s a pity that the officials got the crucial decision wrong.
VJC totally deserved to go into Extra Time. VJC truly deserved the gold because they played clean football. Debates will go on but like a great person said, “When we fall down, we get up again immediately”. ’nuff said.
