ASEAN Schools Basketball: Singapore girls go down to Malaysia in opening game

ITE East, Saturday, July 2, 2011 — Singapore went down 43-59 to Malaysia in the opening match of the ASEAN Schools Games girls’ basketball competition.

It was a tight match throughout the first two periods and Singapore trailed by two at the half. However, the Malaysian swapped their defense to a full-court press in the third quarter and that proved to be Singapore’s undoing.

“I think the girls did well considering this was the first match that they are playing,” commented Singapore coach Chua Mei Hui. “In terms of experience, we lost out as we are a relatively young team but we’re happy with the team’s performance. Hopefully, they will be able to learn from their mistakes and move on from this match to get a better result in the next match.”

“Our defense could not really handle the full court press in the third quarter and that was definitely a challenge for us. But like I said, we’re a young team so I think we did well,” added the coach.

The head coach also singled out Michelle Tsen (#7) for praise after a couple of three pointers from her managed to lift the spirits of her team despite the defeat.

But for now, the team are focusing on their next match against Indonesia on Monday.

“Our goal this tournament is to play consistently and do our best in every match. In terms of result, we hope to win one out of the three matches played as well,” said coach Chua.
