Republic Polytechnic, Sunday, July 3, 2011 — Singapore beat Thailand 66-21 to book a spot in the final of the 3rd ASEAN Schools Games netball competition. Singapore had swept Brunei aside 74-12 in an earlier match.
Singapore continued their winning momentum from the Brunei game to keep Thailand at bay. Ng Si Ying, Anglo Chinese Junior College’s defender, was put in to play Goal Attack, and she had several good runs, bringing in the ball into the goal circle easily. Singapore led 12-4 to enter the second quarter.
Thailand sped up their game and allowed no unanswered goals for the first couple of minutes for the game. However, it was not long before Thailand ran out of gas and allowed Singapore to dominate and lead 32-10 at half-time.
The third quarter continued to be one-sided affair where Singapore further extended their lead to 38 goals at 52-14.
Singapore had all their five bench players taking the court in the last quarter. Nonetheless, Singapore continued to dominate and eventually wrapped up the game 66-21.
Singapore will face Malaysia in their last round robin game. Singapore met Malaysia in the final of last year’s ASEAN Schools Games and lost 28-64.
“The girls played well today. We started well. It was a good game overall. It’ll be a close match tomorrow but we’re going to give them a hard fight. Siying is doing quite well in GA position although the last time she played that position was primary school. Nonetheless she still needs to sharpen up some areas,” shared Teo Yong Chin, Singapore’s coach.
