Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, August 12, 2011 — Unity Secondary needed overtime to beat Dunman Secondary 66-65 In an exciting National C Division Boys’ Basketball semi-final match.
Both teams were quick off the blocks with Unity barely ahead at the end of the first quarter with a slim two-point 18-16 lead. The Unity players were definitely not short on confidence as they sank three 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes.
Dunman, on the other hand, were spearheaded by their #5 who was irrepressible in the first quarter. He scored 10 of his team’s 16 first-quarter points.
Dunman matched Unity’s 11 points in the second quarter to remain two points down (27-29) heading into the second half.
Dunman rallied from behind to tie the score at 40-40 by the end of the third quarter, forcing Unity to to vary their attacks in the final quarter. The Unity players were given the freedom to take threes and they did, converting two in the last 10 minutes of regular time.
Despite the match getting physical, both teams were unable to break the stalemate and ended the fourth quarter tied at 58-58.
Overtime saw Unity breaking through Dunman’s defenses. Dunman fought hard but their pace was visibly slower as they watched Unity hold on to the lead.
As the seconds ticked down, Dunman had a chance to steal the lead but a turnover gave Unity control of the match. As the buzzer sounded, Unity’s one-point lead was enough to send them through to the final.
Catholic High and Unity Secondary will now face each other in the Championship final on Thursday, August 18th, at the Jurong East Sports Hall. Tip off is at 3pm.
Dunman on the other hand will play in the 3rd/4th placing match against Jurong Secondary on Wednesday, August 17th, at Clementi Sports Hall. Tip off is at 3pm.
