Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, August 17, 2011 — The Singapore Chinese Girls’ School survived a second half comeback by Dunman Secondary to win the C Division Girls’ 3rd/4th placing match 48-46.

SCGS were quick to make their mark on the scoreboard right from the start and had pulled a six-point lead by the end of the first quarter. SCGS were able to force many turnovers from Dunman, in which they capitalised for their own advantage.

SCGS’ strong presence in the paint allowed them to grab hold of several rebounds. At the same time, Dunman were finding it hard to break through the defense to put points on the scoreboard.

Midway into the second quarter, SCGS had establised a 22-9 lead over Dunman after two consecutive fast breaks by the SCGS #5.

SCGS continued to rake in points as their play from outside the three-point line went unchallenged, giving them ample opportunities to organise their attacks from all angles. Dunman’s players continued to crowd the paint in the hopes of getting the rebound but were still outmatched by their opponents.

Towards the end of the quarter, Dunman had to settle for scoring points via the free-throw line after drawing several fouls from SCGS.

With just one minute left on the clock, a long range shot by the Dunman #5 found the basket, bringing the score to 26-14. However, SCGS managed to draw a foul just seconds later, allowing the SCGS #10 to convert both her free throws. As play resumed, the SCGS #5 tried to add two more points to the scoreboard but was beaten by the buzzer before she could convert her attempt.

With Dunman trailing by 14-points, they decided to change their playing strategy in the second half.

10 seconds into the third quarter, the Dunman #9 made her team’s first attempt, but saw the ball bounce off the hoop. 20 seconds later, the SCGS #13 drew a foul. She converted both her free throws to give SCGS first blood in the third quarter.

SCGS’ aggressive defending in the third quarter caused many fouls to be called upon them. At the same time, it gave Dunman many valuable opportunities to close the gap via the free throw line.

With just one minute left, Dunman had managed to narrow the score gap to nine points. They soon managed to prevent SCGS from scoring more points as their player smacked the ball out of their SCGS opponents’ hand. However, they were not able to prevent a foul called upon them to give SCGS a chance at the charity strike.

With just four seconds to go, the Dunman #5 managed to steal the ball and made a dash to the basket. However, she was unable to convert her lay up just as the buzzer sounded. By the end of the third quarter, SCGS were still holding on to a 36-27 lead despite Dunman outscoring them 13-8.

In the fourth quarter, Dunman continued their chase. Unable to break through the SCGS defense, Dunman resorted to long range shots in which they had much success. With just five minutes left, the Dunman #9 scored a three-pointer to narrow the score gap to just three points. With the score at 45-42, SCGS promptly called for a time-out.

In the quarter, Dunman had scored five consecutive three-pointers to allow them to narrow the score gap. SCGS fought hard to hold on to their lead and were leading 48-44 with just one minute to go. A slip in passing by SCGS saw the ball intercepted by Dunman which was converted by the Dunman #9.

With just 20 seconds left and two points separating the teams, it was SCGS who eventually held on till the final whistle.
