Over the last 10 years, runners on this island of ours have been signing up for marathons like it’s a walk in the park. Some of you may have wondered — will the number of full marathoners ever stop growing?
Perhaps the registration numbers for the upcoming 2011 Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore will give us an indication. That’s because for the first time in a long while, the number of 42km runners at the Singapore Marathon has not grown.
20,000 have signed up to do the full marathon on December 4th, 2011, the same number as last year. The organisers had a quota of 24,000 spaces for the full marathon this year.
Based on the historical data set below — which, we must add, is not complete — the number of full marathoners have grown about 10-fold since 2002. This year, it looks like we have reached a plateau as far as the full marathon is concerned.
