*Scape, Tuesday, November 1, 2011 — Singapore will make a bid to host the 2015 South-east Asian (SEA) Games, said Teo Chee Hean, Singapore’s deputy prime minister.
“We want to play host to our Southeast Asian neighbours by organising the Games,” said Mr Teo, who is also the president of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).
“Today, I am pleased to announce that the Government has given its support to the Singapore National Olympic Council’s bid to host the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore. The SNOC will make our submission to the SEA Games Federation at its upcoming meeting in Jakarta and we hope that the Federation will agree to Singapore hosting the SEA Games in four years’ time,” he added. Mr Teo was speaking at the flag presentation ceremony for Singapore’s SEA Games-bound contingent.
Singapore hosted the SEA Games in 1973, 1983 and 1993. Before 1977, the event was known as the Southeast Asian Peninsula Games.
Singapore was in line to host the 2007 and 2012 SEA Games but declined because of the rebuilding plans for the National Stadium.
The new National Stadium is expected to be completed in 2014 as part of the new Singapore Sports Hub development.
The new Sports Hub is expected to be completed in 2014.
