Padang, Singapore, Sunday, November 6, 2011 – Daveta of Fiji beat Borneo Eagles 29-19 to win the Ablitt Cup in front of a capacity crowd of 7,000.
Daveta, making their 20th appearance at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby 7s, were worthy champions, having emerged undefeated from their Pool before beating Cobra (Malaysia) 21-10 and Ponsonby (New Zealand) 12-5 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
Borneo Eagles scored the opening try before the Fijians quickly gained the ascendancy as they ran in a number of outstanding tries. The Eagles scored three tries in a valiant effort.
Speaking after his side’s Ablitt Cup victory, Jone Nqoroqorovakatini was overwhelmed by his team’s dominant performance throughout the entire tournament.
“It was a very tough final against Borneo. After coming here for 20 years we’re very pleased to take home the Ablitt Cup again,” he said.
Earlier in the evening, Te Kaha Pirates of New Zealand defeated The Flying Kukris 21-17 in the Jug Final before Cottesloe (Perth, Australia) claimed the Bowl Final with a 21-5 defeat over host side SCC.
In the curtain-raiser to the Ablitt Cup Final, Naptha Pyrenees lined up against Casuarina Cougars and the two sides could not be separated after the full time whistle with the score line at 5-5. In the second half of extra time, Pyrenees scored the game-breaking try to win 10-5.
