Padang, Sunday, December 4, 2011 — Charles Mwai Kanyao, 35, was the surprise winner of at the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore while Irene Jerotich Kosgei, last year’s women’s winner, retained her crown.

For Kanyao, who signed up on his own, the win is a sweet one as it is also his first major marathon win. Kanyao crossed the finish line with a time of 2:14:32.07. Kenyan Luka Kipkemoi Chelimo (2:14:37.35) was second and John Kelai (2:15:44.50), also from Kenya, was third. Kanyao pocketed US$50,000 — approximately S$66,500 — for his win.

Said Kanyao: “It is not easy to win. I trained very hard for this race. The race was difficult but I did my best. It’s my first time in Singapore and I’m glad I came here and won the race.”

In the women’s open category, Kosgei emerged top of the leaderboard with a time of 2:36:40.71, almost one minute
ahead of Roman Gebregessesse who finished with a time of 2:37:30.06. Magadelene Mukunzi completed the top three with a time of 2:38:06.36.

Kosgei also went home with prize money of US$50,000.

Said Kosgei: “At the 35km I took the leap all through, in the sense that I did the same thing last year. As I am familiar with the course, I knew which routes were hard to run, and which were easy. All in all, I am very happy with myself.”

The event took off at three different start points at Orchard Road (42km), Sentosa (21km) and Esplanade Drive (10km), bringing runners Chinatown, Universal Studios Singapore, Gardens by the Bay, the Marina Bay area before finishing at the Padang.
