Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, February 3, 2012 — The seeded teams for the West Zone C Division Netball Championship showed their might in their respective groups.
Nanyang Girls’ High beat Unity Secondary 48-0 while allowing Chestnut Drive Secondary only one goal in a 49-1 win in Group A. In the same group, Clementi Town Secondary did well as they shut down Tanglin Secondary to score a 27-6 first win.
In Group B, Methodist Girls’ also proved their standing by beating both Hillgrove Secondary and West Spring Secondary with impressive scores of 48-1 and 23-9 respectively. Juying Secondary scored their first win of the season with a convincing 23-11 win over Regent Secondary. with 23-11.
In Group C, Bukit Panjang Government High also opened their season with a good result when they beat Westwood Secondary 38-9 and Zhenghua Secondary 49-10. Nan Hua High did equally well by beating Westwood 40-9 and Hong Kah Secondary 36-1.
The match between Bukit Panjang Government High and Nan Hua High should be an exciting match that will determine who tops the group.
In Group D, River Valley High were equally impressive by scoring a 56-3 victory over Chua Chu Kang Secondary. They also beat Yuan Ching Secondary 49-12. Commonwealth Secondary won the game against Choa Chu Kang 21-6 and Jurong West Secondary held their opponents Jurongville Secondary to zero goals with a 28-0 win.
Looking at the scores, it looks quite definite that Nanyang Girls’ High will top Group A with Clementi Town possibly challenging them for the top spot.
In Group B, Methodist Girls’ School look likely to top the group and River Valley High should top Group D.
Only Group C does not have a clear indication as both Bukit Panjang Government High and Nan Hua High seem quite equally matched.
B Division
This year’s B Division is definitely proving to be very interesting with three strong teams in Group A — River Valley High, Methodist Girls’ School and Bukit Panjang Government High. Each of these three schools won their opening match with River Valley beat Jurongville 39-7, Bukit Panjang Government High beating Pioneer Secondary 47-7, and Methodist Girls’ School scoring a 26-13 win over NUS High.
In Group B, Nan Hua High had large winning margins against Unity and Hong Kah, with scores of 50-5 and 55-7 respectively, while Commonwealth notched a 42-9 win over Unity, and 32-15 over Westwood. Westwood secured their only win against Hillgrove in a 22-12 victory.
In Group C, Nanyang Girls’ High have scored the highest number of goals so far. They beat Choa Chu Kang 81-1 and Jurong West 58-9. Chestnut Drive lost their first match to Juying 8-16 while Regent scored their first win with a 46-9 over Juying.
Group D almost saw a potential upset when Yuan Ching narrowly lost 21-23 to Clementi Town. Clementi Town possessed two incredibly tall players but they only used one of them as the goal shooter in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Clementi Town shifted the goal shooter to goal defense and the other tall player entered as a goal shooter. This move worked well against Yuan Ching who had a very active goal attack and wing attack and the Clementi Town goal shooter prevented some easy shots by the goal attack.
However, in the third quarter, Yuan Ching adjusted to the threat caused by the goal defense and started to close the gap. On top of that, Clementi Town’s goal attack was injured and had to leave the game. It was a definitely a very exciting match but Yuan Ching had to work much harder in the attacking circle compared to Clementi Town.
Kranji Secondary look good in Group D as the team won both their matches against Dunearn Secondary (57-2) and Tanglin (40-16). West Spring won their first match in the group with a 31-23 victory over Zhenghua. Clementi Town also beat Zhenghua 50-15 while Yuan Ching beat Tanglin 35-21.
