CCAB, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) continued their winning streak into the second round of the South Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship with a tight 49-43 win over Pei Cai Secondary.
ACS (Barker) point guard Brian Wong (#11) orchestrated his team’s play superbly for the win, scoring 9 points in the process. He was helped by his teammate Sih Yong Jie (#12) who poured in 18 points from the perimeter. Centre Foo Ce Xian (#14) was also menace in the paint for ACS (Barker), scoring 9 points despite struggling with foul troubles throughout the game.
Yet it was Pei Cai which started the brighter of the two teams.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Fairfield Methodist Secondary in an earlier first round group match, they looked to have put their troubles behind them with an inspired start. Pei Cai’s point guard Low Zi Hao (#9) won the battle of the point guards in the first quarter, scoring 5 points and leading his team to a 7-4 first quarter advantage.
ACS (Barker) bounced back in the second quarter though with a 17-14 run to tie the scores at 21 apiece at the half time break. ACS (Barker)’s Ce Xian may have been called for his third personal foul by this time, but he proved the difference in the quarter between the two teams with strong post-up play for 5 consecutive points during this period.
ACS (Barker) continued to build on their lead in the second half, outscoring Pei Cai 13-11 and 14-11 in the final two quarters for a 49-43 victory.
Raffles Institution endured a stirring fightback from Queensway Secondary to triumph 42-26 in another second round Group Y “Group of Death” match. With the win, RI joined ACS (Barker) at the top of the table after the first round of games.
In the Group X matches, Fairfield Methodist edged out Serangoon Garden Secondary 35-33 while Guangyang Secondary ran out comfortable 63-29 winners over Holy Innocents’ High.
