Delta Sports Complex, Thursday, February 16, 2012 — Cedar Girls’ Secondary overcame a shaky start to beat Yuying Secondary 2-0 (25-21, 25-16) in the final of the South Zone B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship. They successfully reclaim the crown they lost in 2011 to Fairfield Methodist Secondary.
Cedar made 20 kills throughout the match, with Claudia (Cedar #18) the top scorer with 10 kills to her name. Yuying notched a respectable number of kills as well but were let down by a large number of unforced errors. However, the team posted eight service aces — seven coming from the first set, which allowed them to run Cedar close at the start.
Yuying grabbed hold of an early advantage at the start with the Yuying #3 firing off three service aces to lead 4-1. They continued to exploit Cedar’s defensive weakness and went on to lead 6-1. A Cedar timeout at this point provided no respite as Yuying raced ahead to lead 10-1.
However, the Yuying #3 subsequently sent her serve into the net to end Yuying’s scoring streak.
Cedar began their slow but steady comeback and drew to within four points of Yuying, trailing 8-12. However, Yuying quickly managed to pull ahead once again. Cedar’s misfiring attacks at this juncture was not helpful to their cause as they watched Yuying take a 18-11 lead.
The fire in Cedar, however, quickly reignited and they rattled the Yuying defense to take a series of points. A timeout by Yuying at the 21-19 mark could not stop Cedar’s advances and the score was soon tied 21-21 after a powerful spike by Claudia (Cedar #18).
The tables were then turned in Cedar’s favour as the Yuying #12 spiked out of bounds. Cedar then took the next point before setting up set point with a spike from Jasmine (Cedar #11). Melissa (Cedar #17) then sealed the set with a service ace.
Cedar started the second set well as they took an early lead. Slightly shaken after losing their lead from the first set, Yuying had trouble finding ways past the Cedar defense. Yuying were left to play catchup, but were soon able to reverse their fortunes to tie the set 13-13.
However, they had no chance at taking the lead as Cedar managed to pull ahead.
Cedar kept up their momentum and soon established a 23-15 lead. Despite a spike error in the next rally, they managed to set up match point after a cross court spike by Claudia (Cedar #18). Cedar were then handed the match point after a spike by Yuying in the next rally went into the net.
