Fukuoka, Japan, Saturday, February 11, 2012 — Singapore’s Cherie Tan notched 218 pinfalls to Malaysia’s Khairuniza Dayang’s 179 pinfalls to win the women’s crown at the 2012 International Bowling Championships. In doing so, she walked away with JPY6,000,000 (US$75,000) — the highest prize money ever won by any Singaporean bowler.
In the final, Khairuniza had closed the ninth and 10th frames with strikes but was unable to close the gap on Cherie. The latter bowled a total of six strikes — in the first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and ninth frames — enroute to her 218 pinfalls for the win.
Seeded second after the semi-final round, Cherie had to bowl against Korea’s Jeon Eun-hee in the second match of the step-ladder finals before she could face off against Khairuniza who had emerged top from the semi-final round and qualified directly into the final.
Cherie beat Jeon in convincing fashion, 235 pinfalls to Jeon’s 189.
In the field of 24, Cherie had scored 2008 pinfalls (fifth highest) in the qualification rounds and 1368 pinfalls (second highest) in the semi-final round for a total of 3376 pinfalls that seeded her second going into the step-ladder finals.
Fellow Singaporean Daphne Tan finished in 23rd position after the semi-final round and did not qualify for the step-ladder finals.
