Orchid Bowl, SAFRA Tampines, February 18, 2012 — Travis Tay won the National Classic bowling title after beating seasoned keglers such as former world champion Remy Ong.
In the final, the 24-year-old former national developmental squad bowler beat Helmi Chew by two games to one. A mere three pins separated the duo in the second of the three games, which Helmi had won to tie the scores.
However, Travis, who had dropped out from the developmental squad to concentrate on his mechanical engineering studies at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), showed composure that belied his relative youth to win the third game and the title.
Travis had beaten the 33-year-old Remy, who was the tournament favourite, in the semi-finals.
Undeterred by Remy’s form, which saw him top of the scoring charts up until then, Travis swept Remy aside to progress into the final where Helmi awaited.
Travis bagged $3,000 in prize money.
Commenting on his performance, Travis said: “I am very happy, because it has been a few years since I last won any major tournament.”
