Presbyterian High, Friday, February 24, 2012 — One year ago when the teams met at the Nationals, it was a close three-set encounter which St Hilda’s Secondary won. This year, there was a reversal of roles as Hua Yi Secondary eked out a hard earned 2-1 (10-25, 25-23, 25-23) win over St Hilda’s Secondary in their Round One, Group C match at the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.
From the start, it was St Hilda’s who appeared to be the one in control as they cruised ahead to establish a staggering lead. Timeouts by Hua Yi at the 11-3 and 16-5 mark could not break the former’s momentum as they sealed the set 25-10.
Things were however very much different in the second set. Hua Yi took the lead right from the start to leave St Hilda’s playing catchup. St Hilda’s eventually managed to close in and level the score 22-22 and kept the score tied till 23-23.
However, Hua Yi managed to prevent St Hilda’s from stealing the lead and took the next two points to force the game into its third set.
St Hilda’s led at the start of the third set to head into the changeover 13-9.
Hua Yi feverishly kept up the chase with their efforts finally paying off when they tied 23-23.
St Hilda’s then lost the lead after a spiking error at this crucial point gave Hua Yi match point. Hua Yi then saw the final point gifted to them after a St Hilda’s player sent her spike into the net.
