B Div Vball: Yishun Town hold off Catholic High in Group A match

Ministry of Education Sports & Recreation Club, Wednesday, February 29, 2012 — Yishun Town Secondary held off a late challenge by Catholic High to win 2-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-22) in a Round One, Group A match at the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

Yishun Town took off with the lead as Catholic High were left to play catch-up. At times, Catholic High came to within one point of Yishun Town but the latter would pull ahead once again.

Midway through the set, Yishun Town managed to pull ahead to lead 16-12 before further extending it to 20-14.

Catholic High struggled to make a comeback and could not stop Yishun Town from reaching set point. Eugene (Catholic High #17), however, managed to hold off Yishun Town for one point as he forced a touch out with his spike. Krishnan (Yishun Town #2) took the final point for his team as he powered down a spike from the outside.

Things were slightly different for Catholic High in the second set. Despite trailing 0-3 at the start, they drew level and blitzed ahead to leave Yishun Town in their wake. Despite the latter trying hard to keep the score close, they had to contend with Catholic High running ahead to lead 20-9.

However, Catholic High’s run was momentarily broken as Yishun Town staged a comeback attempt. Yishun Town narrowed the scores to 22-17, prompting a timeout from Catholic High. After the timeout, Yishun Town managed to take the next point, but Pei Jie (Catholic High #1) took the subsequent one for the team after a light tap into an empty spot. The scores were at 23-18 in Catholic High’s favour.

Catholic High were then at set point after Krishnan (Yishun Town #2) sent his spike out of bounds. After one more rally, Catholic High sealed the set after the Catholic High #12 spiked off the Yishun Town block.

Yishun Town blitzed ahead in the third set to lead 7-3. Catholic High’s put up a strong defense but fatigue was obviously setting in as their attacks started lacking the edge.

At the changeover, Yishun Town were leading 13-5, prompting a timeout from Catholic High.

As Yishun Town continued to pull forward, Catholic High were slowly trying to make a comeback.

Yishun Town saw their lead gradually diminish, prompting a timeout at the 17-14 mark. However, there was no stopping Catholic High as they drew to within two points of Yishun Town, trailing 20-22.

Catholic High drew that gap closer when they came within a point of Yishun Town at 23-22 after Pei Jie (Catholic High #1) forced yet another touch out.

A timeout was called by Yishun Town at this moment in a bid to disrupt Catholic High’s comeback. Zhi Wei (Yishun Town #3) managed to take the next point after spiking down the court boundary.

Catholic High, unfortunately, could not see through their comeback as they lost the final rally to see Yishun Town take the set 25-22.
