Kallang Tennis Centre, Monday, February 27, 2012 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) secured their place in the final of the National B Division Tennis Championship after a 5-0 win over Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH).
The first singles match between Wu Qiujia of NYGH and Stephanie Wong of SCGS was a close game. The two players made a spectacular show of intense rallying with Stephanie playing many well-timed lobs. Qiujia tried to return the attack but many unforced errors saw her lose eventually lose the last set 6-7.
Nicolette Foo (SCGS) then beat Kwon Kaili (NYGH) to give SCGS a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, in the first doubles, Miku Seko and Lee Jing Hong of SCGS found a strong opponent in Victoria Lim and Mildred Ang of NYGH. The SCGS won the rubber set 6-0 for a 2-1 win.
In the second doubles, Christy Koh and Michelle Chia (SCGS) were up against Joey Seah and Amanda Yap (NYGH). The SCGS pair won the first 6-1 but Joey and Amanda came back to win the second set 6-4 to tie it up 1-1 for NYGH. In the third set, the NYGH pair trailed 0-3 initially but made a strong comeback to tie it up 3-3. Unfortunately, service faults by NYGH cost them and SCGS claimed the second doubles point.
For the third singles, Nicole Teoh (NYGH) pitted her skills against Steffi Kong (SCGS). The first set was a disappointing 0-6 loss for Nicole but she quickly regained her footing in the second set to put up a tougher challenge for Steffi before going down 4-6.
In a heartening display of sportsmanship, both teams cheered for each other after the game.
NYGH will meet Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) in the 3rd/4th placing deciding match while SCGS will play Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) to decide the championship winner.
