Bangkok, Sunday, March 18, 2012 — The Singapore Slingers beat the Thailand Slammers 77-70 to break their seven-game losing skid in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
The return of centre Kyle Jeffers to the roster saw immediate returns as the American had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Slinger Louis Graham had a game-high 27 points while local Singaporeans Wong Wei Long and Desmond Oh had 19 and 12 points respectively.
The win improved the Slingers win-loss record to 5-8. It was their first win since February 1st.
The Slingers opened with a 9-0 run sparked by a Kyle Jeffers dunk until the Slammers’ Calvin Williams put an end to the proceedings with his own dunk at the 6:26 mark. The Slingers closed the quarter leading 17-13, with Boyet Bautista scoring eight of the those 13 points for the Slammers.
The lead changed hands six times in the second quarter with Williams making a basket to give the Slammers their first lead of the game with nearly eight minutes still left to play till half time.
The Slingers trailed the Slammers slightly until Slinger Kyle Jeffers put in two free throws and followed up with a basket to tie the game at 32-32 at the half-time break.
The Slingers pulled ahead in the third quarter with Jeffers once again opening up the scoring for his team. It was all about the Slingers in this quarter as they surged ahead to lead by 11 points with 2:40 left on the clock. Despite repeated attempts by the hosts to close in, the Slingers were able to maintain their lead throughout to end the quarter leading 56-50.
It was down to the wire in the final quarter and it looked like the Slammers would have a shot at pushing the game into overtime after a Calvin Williams dunk put them at just one point behind the Slingers with 3:55 left in the game.
The Slingers replied with a seven-point run to grab their first win in eight games.
The Slingers return home to Singapore to host the Philippine Patriots on Sunday, March 15th.
