Presbyterian High, Wednesday, March 21, 2012 — Defending champions St Hilda’s Secondary continued their title defense in style as they romped to a convincing 2-0 (25-12, 25-19) win over Fairfield Methodist Secondary in a Round Two, Group X match at the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship. They have now qualified for the semi-final despite having one more match to play.
St Hilda’s asserted their dominance right at the start as they raced off to a 9-4 lead. A timeout by Fairfield at this point could not stop St Hilda’s advances as they blitzed ahead to establish a commanding lead at 23-11. The St Hilda’s #3 then took set point after the team managed to trick Fairfield with decoys.
A blocking error by St Hilda’s in the next rally gave Fairfield the point but Fairfield subsequently sent their serve into the net for St Hilda’s to take the set 25-12.
St Hilda’s started the second set with the lead as Fairfield tried to keep the score close.
St Hilda’s managed to break away from Fairfield after the 10-9 mark and raced ahead once again. Timeouts by Fairfield at the 16-12 and 20-15 mark could not break St Hilda’s momentum as the latter took match point after a powerful spike by the St Hilda’s #3.
He subsequently finished off the set by spiking a loose ball back into Fairfield’s court.
St Hilda’s will next play Shuqun Secondary in a top of the table clash on Friday, March 23 to determine who will finish on top of Group X.
