Queensway Secondary, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 — Hong Kah Secondary caused a major upset when they downed Woodlands Secondary 1-0 in a Round 2 match of the National B Division Girls’ Football Championship.
Hong Kah had already ruffled some feathers when they emerged as group champions in the first round after beating Henderson Secondary, Fuchun Secondary, Victoria Junior College, and drawing against Cedar Girls’ Secondary.
What was amazing about the victory was that the current Woodlands team were the National C Division champions two years ago while Hong Kah didn’t even have a girls’ football Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) then. A girls’ football CCA only came into being at football mad Hong Kah in 2011.
Woodlands, with two National age group players, were confident going into the match knowing that they had comprehensively beaten Hong Kah 3-0 in a friendly two months ago.
Prior to the match, the odds were stacked against Hong Kah as they were missing current tournament joint top-scorer, Hazirah Zulkifli, who was nursing an ankle injury sustained during a friendly match against ITE West during the March school holidays.
Woodlands dominated the match but a tight and well drilled Hong Kah defence managed to keep Woodlands at bay while Hushwarya d/o Ramachandran sneaked in a solitary goal in the 30th minute against the run of play.
There was no further scoring and after the referee blew the final whistle, there were scenes of jubilation all around the Hong Kah camp.
In the meantime, Hong Kah await the next match between Greenview and Woodlands on March 22nd to ascertain if they have clinched a place in the semi-finals.
