B Div Vball (Girls): Ngee Ann beat Nanyang to qualify for semi-finals

Presbyterian High, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 — Ngee Ann Secondary booked a spot in the semi-finals after a 2-0 (25-18, 25-10) win over Nanyang Girls’ in a Group Y match at the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Ngee Ann had come into the match lying in third place with three points from two matches played. Their 2-0 win over Nanyang, who fielded mostly a reserve-side, meant that they leapfrogged Dunman Secondary into second spot. When Dunman subsequently lost to Presbyterian High 2-0 in a later match, it meant that it was Ngee Ann who progressed into the semi-finals at the expense of their East Zone rivals.

Ngee Ann got off to a slow start as they trailed Nanyang 6-9 before a timeout turned things around for them. Taking advantage of Nanyang’s hit errors, Ngee Ann quickly closed back in to tie the score 11-11 via a service ace from Hui Wen (Ngee Ann #7). Ngee Ann then turned the tables on Nanyang and pulled ahead to eventually lead 21-17.

A timeout by Nanyang at this point could not stop Ngee Ann from extending their lead and were soon at set point after Mei Hui (Ngee Ann #1) sent a drop shot into Nanyang’s court while she was unblocked. Ngee Ann then took the set after Nanyang spiked out of bounds.

Ngee Ann blitzed off to a 7-0 lead in the second set before Nanyang took their first point when Wen Xin (Ngee Ann #13) sent a drop shot out of bounds.

Despite this, Ngee Ann’s momentum was not broken as they continued their scoring streak to eventually lead 20-8.

Nanyang could not close in and soon saw Ngee Ann at match point after a service ace from Carol (Ngee Ann #6). Ngee Ann then sealed the match after Mei Hui (Ngee ANn #1) sent a lightly tapped spike off the Nanyang block which dropped into an empty spot.
