Republic Polytechnic, Thursday, April 5, 2012 — St Andrew’s Secondary beat Raffles Institution 15-7 to win the National B Division Rugby Championship. Saints led 3-0 at half time.
St Andrew’s last won the title in 2009. In 2011, they went down 0-5 to Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and in 2010, they lost the final 7-8, also to ACS(I).
Saints beat ACS (Barker Rd) 22-0 to make the final.
This is their fourth B Division title in the last 10 years and the win is also especially sweet as 2012 is the 150th anniversary of the school.
For RI, they had the satisfaction of beating defending champions ACS(I) 13-12 in the semi-final but they have yet to win the B Division title since 1991, a 21-year span.
Saints went ahead in the first half when Syirazinurdiniezaman Kamalzuranan put them ahead 3-0 from a penalty kick. In the second half, Adriel Toh scored an unconverted try to put the Saints 8-0 up.
However, RI clawed their way back with a Marcel Low try that Park Chang Kyu converted to set the 1,000-strong crowd on edge as the deficit was reduced to just one at 7-8.
With one minute left on the clock, Saints captain Samuel Koh charged down an RI kick in his own half, picked up the ball and ran more than half the pitch to score a converted try and seal a 15-7 win.
