Kallang Netball Centre, Monday, April 9, 2012 — Netball powerhouses Singapore Sports School found themselves out of a semi-final spot in the National C Division Netball Championship after Nanyang Girls’ High beat St Margaret’s Secondary 23-17 in their final Round 2 game.
Nanyang’s win left Sports School, St Margaret’s and themselves in a three-way tie with identical 1-2 win-loss records. Nanyang proved to have the highest goal difference and they qualified for the semi-finals along with Tanjong Katong Secondary who won all their three Round 2 games.
Tanjong Katong had beaten Sports School 38-27 in their final group game and that gave Nanyang a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals if they could beat St Margaret’s.
St Margaret’s started the first quarter well with their quick attacking and sharp shooting and led comfortably. In the second quarter, Nanyang got used to St Margaret’s pacing and managed to level the game before grabbing a two-point lead at half time.
Nanyang continued playing well in the third quarter as they forced St Margaret’s into turnovers.
Nanyang took a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter, as fatigue started setting in on both sides.
St Margaret’s mounted an all out assault in the final quarter. Although there were some turnovers, Nanyang’s defenders played well enough to prevent St Margaret’s from eating into their lead to preserve the victory.
Nanyang will take on CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) in one semi-final while Tanjong Katong will play Methodist Girls’ School in the other semi-final on Tuesday, April 17th.
