ABL: Slingers beat Cobras 95-78 to close in on playoff berth

Singapore Indoor Stadium, Sunday, April 22, 2012 — The Singapore Slingers beat the Bangkok Cobras 95-78 to go fifth in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) table.

The win improved the Slingers’ win-loss record to 7-9 and they are now just two points behind the Malaysia Dragons (8-9) who occupy the fourth and final playoff spot. San Miguel Beermen (14-4), the Philippine Patriots (13-4), and the Indonesia Warriors (9-9) occupy the first three spots respectively.

Kyle Jeffers led all scoring with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Louis Graham also recorded a double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Jai Reyes had a team-high 21 points for the Cobras, with Gentry Lewis and Marvin Cruz adding 15 and 14 points respectively.

Louis Graham gave the Slingers a 14-7 lead with a successful 3-point play and his team went on to close out the quarter 35 to 20.

The Cobras shooting was poor in the second quarter, as they made only 9-of-27 field goal attempts and 1-of-6 3-point attempts in the first half.

Meanwhile, Slingers’ Wong Wei Long put in an outstanding performance, leading his team with 14 points as the home team took a massive 25-point, 52-27 lead into the half-time break.

The third quarter was more competitive, with the Slingers just edging the scoring 20 to 21 to lead by 24 points at 72-48 going into the final quarter.

The Slingers found themselves in trouble in the final quarter with Desmond Oh and Wong Wei Long both getting their fifth personal fouls in the game early.

Capitalising on the situation, the Cobras went on a stunning 13-point run with two minutes left on the clock to close the gap to just six points at 76-82. However, the Cobras ran into some foul trouble at this point, enabling the Slingers to come back with a 13-point run of their own to close out the game 95-76.

The Slingers play the San Miguel Beermen next in an away game on Wednesday, April 25th.
