PESEB, Friday, April 27, 2012 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) continued their unbeaten run when they defeated defending champions Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 2-0 (25-14, 25-22) in their Round Two, Group X top of the table clash at the A Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.
NYJC stamped their dominance right at the start when they ran off to lead 4-0 before HCI managed to take a point after forcing a touch-out. However, NYJC took control of the match once again and raced ahead. NYJC put up several good blocks to stuff out many of HCI’s attacks and quickly took the set 25-14.
It was a closer start to the second set as HCI started finding ways to break past NYJC’s defenses. Midway through, NYJC regained their momentum and pulled ahead to hold a comfortable lead. HCI seemed to have a herculean task ahead if they wanted to turn the tables but a stroke of luck gave them a golden opportunity.
Dao Liang (HCI #13) broke NYJC’s momentum when he scored from a jump serve. He continued putting pressure on NYJC and HCI soon saw themselves trailing by just one point at 19-20.
NYJC called a timeout and it allowed them to regain control as they extended their lead once again. Soon, they were leading 24-22, with Johner (NYJC #5) securing the last point after a personal time difference attack, where he managed to trick the HCI blockers and then jumping up to thunder the ball down unblocked.
Final score
NYJC 2 HCI 0
25-14, 25-22
Both teams are already through to the semi-finals where NYJC will play Anderson JC while HCI will take on Anglo-Chinese JC.
