Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Thursday, April 5, 2012 – Eugenia Tan won her first National Schools’ individual gold medal in three years in style when she finished first in the Girls’ B Division 200 metres final at the 53rd National Schools Track and Field Championships.
The 16-year-old Singapore Sports School athlete clocked a personal best time of 25.64 seconds to win handily by over a second. It bettered the electronically-timed championship record of 25.65, set by Nurulaini Bte Ariffin in 1995, the first year that electronic timing was used in the National Schools’ Championships. The hand-timed record of 25.50 was set by Mona Kunalan, then of CHIJ St Joseph’s Convent, in 1987.
This was Eugenia’ first individual success since winning the C Division 100m gold medal in 2009. Since then, her schoolmate Shanti Pereira had gone on to record double sprint titles in 2010 and 2011. Shanti was the second fastest qualifier in both the heats and semi-finals, but withdrew from the final.
Sheryl Tey of Nanyang Girls’ High School finished second in a personal best time of 26.84. Sports School’s Jermaine Liang was third, in a time of 27.22.
It was the largest margin of victory in this event at the National Schools’ championships since Nurulaini won the 1995 final by 1.81 seconds.
